The Mayor and Township Committee are pleased to report that the Township has settled with the Attorney General's Office regarding allegations that the Township’s website contained restrictive language regarding same-sex marriages.
In October 2022, the State of New Jersey issued Notices of Violation against several municipalities, including Hanover Township. At that time, there was an initial proposal to resolve this matter, which was contingent on the Township of Hanover admitting it had engaged in discrimination. The Township rejected this proposal. A complaint was then filed against the Township in the Division of Civil Rights.
The Township responded to the complaint and supplied the Attorney General’s Office with additional proof and documentation to demonstrate that there were no instances of the denial of same-sex marriages and that the Township’s website had been immediately updated. After several months of negotiations, the Township was able to resolve the matter with the State without fines or penalties.
The matter is now closed.
