The Green Team cordially invites Hanover Township residents to sign up on-line to obtain a free Earth Machine compost bin on a first-come, first-serve basis, while supplies last. Giveaway is part of the Green Team’s "Sustainable Soil" backyard pilot compost program, made possible through a $10,000 Sustainable Jersey grant sponsored by the PSEG Foundation and awarded to the Township earlier this year.
See the flyer (PDF) for more details.
To qualify, you must live in Hanover Township and use the bin at the address where you reside. Eligible residents will be required to pick up their compost bin between September 1st through October 9th from the Hanover Township Recycling Center located on Stoney Brook Road in Whippany during the center’s hours of operation (see website flyer for details.) Recipients must wear a mask while at the Recycling Center and show the attendant proof of residency.
The compost bin comes in two parts and should easily fit into any automobile. When assembled, the unit measures 33”x 33” and weighs 15 pounds. Each resident is responsible for assembling and maintaining their own bin. At some point in the future, the Green Team will use social media and seminars to educate residents on how to properly use the bin.
The Green Team purchased the Earth Machine compost bins through a portion of a $10,000 Sustainable Jersey grant paid for by the PSEG Foundation. The Township was awarded the funding earlier this year to support the Green Team’s “Sustainable Soil” backyard pilot compost program. Initially, the Green Team had intended to give the bins away as a free drawing during an upcoming community event. However, restrictions currently in place to safeguard the public against the spread of COVID-19 that have put public events on an indefinite hold, challenged them to “think out of the bin” for distribution.
“I’m thrilled the Green Team found a way to go forward with this part of the “Sustainable Soil” initiative in time to take advantage of the fall composting season,” stated John L. Ferramosca, Hanover Township Mayor and governing body liaison to the Green Team. “They came up with a way to give these bins to residents that’s safe, cost-effective, and being paperless, very green.”
All bins have been claimed! Thank you for the overwhelming response. To stay up-to-date on the Green Team or to be notified about future giveaways, please check back often.
